Cassidy had been gone for a long time. Too long, in fact. Everything had been dark and cold, and she couldn’t remember anything except for her name. The level of disorientation was frightening to her; faces and memories kept blurring together into one massive scene scape, and she didn’t know what to do. Her dreams were more like nightmares. She was plagued with the fact that she couldn’t decipher what was real from what was fake, and more than anything she was frustrated with the fact that she kept seeing one dreamlike face in particular. Something told her that the face was one that had been in her life since the beginning, but no, that wasn’t quite right. The face had, but not the person belonging to the face. But again, it made no sense. Nothing made sense. Not the scene of the man with the unfamiliarly recognizable face putting a ring on her finger, certainly. That must be a dream. She would never be married so young… All she wanted was to be out of the confusing blackness where she thought everything in circles.
She had been gone a long time, and she knew a lot had changed. The people she was with now told her everything about who she should be: kind and courteous, never asking a single question. Those things felt wrong on her. She was selfish. She knew that much for sure. Selfish, because she had pushed him away. But who was him? It caused Cass headache after headache, because even her name felt wrong. The man in her dreams called her by another name, sometimes, but she could never quite recall it in her waking hours, so she had just let it go. She had begun to swallow who these people were telling her she was because that was the easiest option. She worked humbly as a waitress, and her boyfriend, Andrew, was a police officer. He told her about circumstances from when they were younger, all these fantastic and completely unreal stories that made Cassie even unhappier than she already was because she couldn’t recollect a single one of them.
The poor girl just wanted her life back, but the routine she had settled into was too easy to get herself lost in. Andrew wanted more from her physically, and who was she to tell him no? Just because she was unhappy didn’t mean that she had to make him unhappy, too, even if everything did feel wrong. Another thing she was taught about herself was that she didn’t ask questions, so she wouldn’t. She was working that day, in the early morning. The shift went by without a word, as it always did. People around the diner always gave her strange looks, which confused her. And whenever Andrew came in, the looks they gave him were simply scathing. She’d catch him, more than once, having a hushed and angry conversation with some of the older folks of the town. She caught her name being spoken more than once, and it confused her. Why would anyone talk about her? Well, outside of the obvious. Poor Cassidy who forgot her name. Poor Cassidy who forgot her family and her friends. Poor Cassidy who wasn’t Cassidy. She heaved a sigh, going to a table and pouring the people some coffee before glancing at the clock. Her shift was over, perfect! She was ready to go home and sleep away the headache that was making her head burn.
She walked behind the counter and took off her apron, brushing her hair behind her ear and tossing it down in the apron box. Then she gave a small smile and goodbye to the owner, and walked out the door. The air was cool and refreshing, exactly what she needed. Her headache was chased away instantly as she walked down the street, her feet having a mind of their own. But, she had to stop when she heard someone yelling at her. The name, it was familiar. She turned slowly, and that unfamiliar but knowable face was there. Tall, lean, and impossibly handsome, that face was real. All at once his name came to her: Jake. She swallowed hard, as his slightly trembling hand reached out to touch the all but faded bruise on her brow, and she heard a name – her name? – fall from his lips.
”Eden?” He queried, and Cassidy, no, Eden, blinked. ”Is that me? Am I… Eden?” She asked softly, her eyes wide and full of questions that needed answers, ”Tell me. Tell me who I am, please. Please.” She begged, her eyes filling with tears, ”Because I know your face. I know you.”

Jacob Tyler was going insane. He was literally, steadily, and heartbreakingly going insane. Eden Lucitania, the girl that he had been in love with since he was sixteen-years-old, was missing. One month. One long, painful, terrifying month. That was how long she had been gone. Poor mister Tyler was out of his head with all of the emotions mixing around inside of him. He had never thought that he would be forced to live without Eden. Not like this. Of course, he was always scared that she would walk away from him. But, this. This was different. Eden would never just leave. He knew that something terrible had happened to her. The storm that had been raging on the night she'd had to go to that orchestra concert had it lodged in Jacob's mind that either she had crashed, or she had been taken without anyone knowing it. Unfortunately for him, police couldn't find evidence of a crash at all. There was no trace of Eden's car, or Eden herself. It was as if she'd just vanished from the face of the Earth. After a couple weeks, the police gave up active searching. They told Jake to face the fact that Eden was gone and she wasn't coming back.
What those policemen didn't understand, however, was that Jake had no intention of doing what they'd told him. After they had stopped looking, he had started. Hours and hours of endless searching, asking person after person if they'd seen her. Many people just told him no, and that they would keep an eye out. He knew that they wouldn't, though. What was one random young girl to them? He was sure that they wouldn't even remember her face after they walked away from him. Still, he looked, begging anyone if they knew information on her. Each day, he would drive the same route that she had meant to take that night. And each time he did, he found no sign of her. Jake would search the neighboring towns, going to every hospital within a fifty mile radius, hoping that maybe she'd been admitted. Whenever he asked the morgues, he would pray that it would not be the one time that he'd finally find her. Yet, here he was, one month later, not a single step closer to finding her.
His manager was starting to get furious. Jake could understand why. He had a job to do. However, it was hard to concentrate on performing and smiling for the crowd when the love of his life was nowhere to be found. After a few weeks of saying that he simply couldn't perform, he'd finally agreed to do a show. Though, it became clear from the start when he messed up the first verse of the song, that it wasn't going to happen. Several spewed verses and an angry throw of the microphone into a wall later, he'd given up. In the long run, Jacob was sure that that would hurt him. But, he just couldn't find it in him to care. He barely ate, almost never slept. The one and only thing that was on his mind was Eden. The young Aussie simply wouldn't be able to move on with his life until he found her. It was his sheer determination that kept him going. And the knowledge that Eden was out there somewhere. There had to be a good reason as to why she hadn't come back yet. Something, or someone must have been keeping her from him. The very thought sent an anger that he wasn't used to coursing through him. It was a task for Jake to get angry. Oftentimes it was next to impossible. But, mess with Eden, and his anger was just as quick and high as anyone else.
So, here he was again. A town that he had not yet checked. One, however, that didn't seem promising. It was a small town. Doubtless someone would notice the little addition and would go to the police. He would look anyway. Just in case. Parking his car in a lot on the edge of town, he grabbed the picture of Eden that he'd been using to search for her, a simple photo of her smiling sweetly at him, and started trudging towards the heart of town. It didn't seem that many people were out, maybe because there wasn't many people to be out in the first place. Jake eyed a person who looked like they would be a promising start and headed towards them. Only to glance over and stop dead in his tracks. Hazel eyes widened as he did a double-take. There was no way. It couldn't be - "Eden!" He called before he even knew what he was doing. "Eden? Eden!" He called her name again, and she stopped, turning towards his voice. It was then that he darted towards her. It really was! Eden was standing right in front of him! Alive! Relief washed through him so hard that he almost physically stumbled from it. Instead, he found himself raising a slightly shaking hand to a fading bruise on her beautiful face. "Eden?" He said again in a low tone, not understanding why she hadn't run towards him as well, arms open for an embrace.
When she spoke, her words surprised him. He had been right. Something had been wrong. She didn't know who she was? Maybe Jacob had be correct in assuming that she'd been in a car accident. One that had erased her memory. "You... you're Eden. Eden Lucitania." He answered, the relief and concern thickening his accent. "I'm Jake Tyler. We're engaged. I've known you ever since I moved to Italy when I was sixteen. When I stumbled upon you by the waterfall. You were only thirteen, but you were so beautiful, even then. And we became closer and were the best of mates. But, I always loved you. Always. No matter who else came into my life. It was always you." He moved closer to her, taking her hands in his and looking deep into her eyes. "I love you, Eden. More than anything. Please remember that. That's who you are. You're mine. My love. My life. My Eden."

Seeing Jake in front of her, this man from her dreams, the man that brought about all of her headaches for the last month, things started sliding into place. The dreams weren’t really dreams, they were memories. His words rang true in her head. She was engaged to be married, and she loved him. She figured that was part of the reason why things felt so wrong, why she was so confused. It was because Cassie… no, that wasn’t right. It was because she, Eden, was so strongly pulled to someone else. Because she loved Jake with her whole heart and soul. Staring into those increasingly familiar hazel eyes, things started coming at her in flashes. Her grip tightened on his hands, and she looked down, her body beginning to shake with the intensity of the memories coursing through her. It was all coming back, everything, and it was giving her the biggest headrush. If it wasn’t for Jake’s hands holding tightly onto hers, she might have run away and hid until she could make sense of her mind. That was the person she had become.
The reason she was so unhappy, besides the fact that she was confused and felt out of place, was because Andrew, the man who ‘loved’ her, yelled at her. He yelled at her every day. The only time he had ever stopped was when she had asked him in a quiet, tremulous voice if he had yelled at her before the accident, too. He had looked at her, blinked slowly, and answered no. That she was too different now to be recognizable, but he loved her away. Raising his voice was just a way of bringing the old Cassie back. Eden had wanted to tell him that if that was what it was going to be like, then she didn’t want the old Cassie, but his words had knocked her down so much that she was afraid to talk back. As a matter of fact, she was so skittish now that she rarely ever talked outside of speaking when spoken to. Remembering everything about herself now let her realize just how unlike her that was. But sadly, even though she remembered everything else, she couldn’t forget everything that had happened to her since the accident. God, she wished she could… but then again, maybe it was a good thing.
Along with memories of who she was came vivid memories and recollections of what exactly it was that happened to her. She had been going to an orchestra concert where they were playing all of her pieces; it was a huge honor, and she absolutely had to be there to conduct. Jake wasn’t able to attend because he was touring, but Eden had to make sure he stayed put and had fed him the wrong date for the concert because she knew that he’d try and show up anyway, which would mean possibly missing a show because of time restraints. So, a day early, she had rolled out of her home and started driving on the long, dark back road to a small town in middle of California. She had stopped for gas, and someone in the restaurant had recognized her; kept calling her Cass, asking her how she was here. It frightened her especially when she heard the words, But I thought I killed you. So, she had quickly paid for her gas and left. The night had gotten dark, and she was about to pull over at the next stop a few miles down the road and get a motel room when blaring headlights came up behind her.
After nearly fifteen minutes of chase, where Eden was nothing short of beside herself with fear, the person chasing her had run her off the road. That man had been Andrew, and everything else was history. She knew the story from there… now matter how badly she now wished she could have forgotten. It had been a whole month of abuse and neglect and living with a murderer, a whole entire month without the reason that she smiled. Even if she hadn’t have remembered Jake, she was certain that she would have missed him anyway. Even then, in that moment, with that serious look in his eyes that was so unnatural for his face considering his near permanent carefree smile, she was struck with how him just holding her hands made her a little bit safer. She was sad to say that she wasn’t the same Eden that had left him, however. Dark things now plagued her, and maybe it would be best for the both of them if she just tried to walk away. If she tried to make it seem like she had forgotten him. But Eden knew she could never good that; alas, she had never been a good liar and while some things had changed ,that most certainly hadn’t.
Eden’s soft and tremulous voice finally rang out in the silence that had befallen them, her dark, sad brown eyes finally meeting Jake’s again, ”I… I remember now… Jake… I remember…” She’d swallow hard, shaking her head. God, how could she even begin to apologize for this? For leaving without telling him, for being gone for so long, for being returned in this damaged state? Eden couldn’t find all the words, but by God, she was going to try. He deserved that much. ”I remember you… I remember everything. Oh, Jake…” She finally gasped out, that rich and flavorful accent that had been absent in her voice without her memory of the language flaring back into life. She moved forward, closer, aching to be safe in his arms. Safe in the only place that mattered to her. Maybe if she was there, then everything else could just fade away, ”I’m so sorry… I forgot you… I forgot everything… Oh Jake, it’s been awful…” She whispered, before moving slowly into his arms and burying her face in his chest, inhaling his familiar and comforting scent. The reunion may have turned sweeter, had another intruder entered their mist, grabbing her forearm and pulling her back. ”Cassidy, what the hell is this?” Andrew asked angrily, saying lowly to her, but not low enough so Jake couldn’t hear completely, ”You stupid bitch. You know what I told you about talking to fucking strangers. You’re so fucking pathetic and worthless.”

For one month, Jacob had been wondering if he would ever see his beloved again. A part of him knew, however, that it was impossible for Eden to be gone for good. She was, as he'd come to figure out in a very short amount of time, so deeply ingrained in his life that he knew that if she were no longer there, he was no longer there. Not entirely. His time without her was proving that he couldn't live his life properly without her. And he wondered just how long it would take before everything came crashing down around him. Literally and figuratively. Not only was his career in jeopardy, but everything else about him as well. Jake was known as the guy who always smiled. His laugh was infectious and he always seemed to know how to make anyone feel better. Very rarely, did one ever see him upset or unhappy. Yet, here he was was, every single day, feeling utterly miserable and simply unable to pull off that grin that was once so effortless. In that way, he needed Eden. She wasn't just someone that he cared about. She'd become the reason. The reason he laughed, smiled, the reason he woke up in the morning to pursue whatever it was that he wanted. She gave him strength. And without her there, he felt that strength fading rapidly.
But, it seemed that there was some sort of miracle happening at the moment, because there she was. The most beautiful thing he'd ever seen, standing right in front of him once again. Things were off, though. She wasn't smiling and there was something almost dead about her. Jake wasn't used to seeing her like this at all. Whatever... or whoever had done this to her wasn't going to get away with it anymore. Now that he'd found her, Jake wasn't letting go again. As he stared at her, taking in her appearance, that anger that he'd felt was nestling in his chest, beginning to take hold in a way that he wasn't used to at all. Everything about her stance, the way her eyes darted downward, or how she seemed so utterly lost; it was all feeding the fire inside of him. Right then and there, he knew he would do whatever it took to make her better, to get her back to how she used to be when she was with him. Which started with getting her out of this depressing little town. She would go home. They would go home.
As she spoke, he still watched her closely. Her voice was low, almost afraid. Jake wanted nothing more than to take her into his arms and never let go. "No. Don't apologize." He gently reassured her. "You have nothing to be sorry for. All that matters is that I found you." Finally, she moved into him and he took her into a gentle embrace. No one would ever know how good it felt to be holding her again. After so long without her there, it was simply heaven to be able to touch her again. However, his happiness was rudely cut short by someone unexpectedly ripping Eden away from him. The anger that had subsided slightly as he held her came roaring back into life stronger than he'd ever felt it before. Hazel eyes narrowed at this newcomer. Instantly, he knew that this was the reason why Eden hadn't been able to come home. He was the one who had been keeping her, turning her into someone that Eden was just not. At that moment, he didn't care that he was wearing a police man's uniform, or that he probably knew much more about combat than Jake ever would. The only thing that he could process were the evil little words that he was hissing at Jake's saving grace. And that was not okay.
"Hey!" He said loudly, successfully getting the man to look up at him. In that moment, Jake used every ounce of anger that he could and swung, landing a punch squarely on his jaw, sending him sprawling to the ground. Both fists were clenched, as he looked down at the pathetic excuse for a human. "Don't you dare touch her again." His voice was no longer loud, but hatred seeped from every word. "Don't speak to her. Don't even look at her. Or you will regret it." Never had Jacob spoken this way. Never had he loathed someone so much in his life. But, this man had done something that even Jake could never forgive. And he wasn't going to let him do it any longer.

Eden was never the type to get angry at anyone, but this… this was slowly infuriating her. Who was this Andrew, that he would have any right to withhold such vital information about herself? Who was he to hurt her like this, possibly in such a way that she was irreparable? She was sure that under Jake’s careful ministrations, she would return to some semblance of normal. But even that was far from then. She barely had a grip on who she was again, and here she was being torn away from the one person who could answer the rest of her questions. The abuse she’d undertaken from Andrew would not be lost on her in days to come. His hand tightening on her arm made her squeeze her eyes shut, shame flooding through her. What would Jake think of this? She was nothing more than a verbal punching bag. Eden was unprepared for anyone to fight for her, so when Jake suddenly lashed out at Andrew, and she was pulled away from him, she was surprised. Her hand worriedly found the back of Jake’s shirt, holding on as tight as she possibly could. He wouldn’t hurt himself, not on her account. But, suddenly, Jake’s fist was arcing through the air and connecting with Andrew’s face, and Eden gasped.
”Jake.. Jake, please.. Just stop. Come on…” She begged, pulling on his shirt as he spoke those low and frightening words to Andrew. His tone made her pause, and she froze up, clenching her eyes shut. No. It was fine, everything was fine. Jake would never use that tone of voice wit her… he was Jake! He was just mad… mad at what Andrew had done to her… The soft words of reassurance flooded through her head repeatedly, and when Jake finally turned to face her, the only thing that she could do was stare at him with wide eyes. ”Jake.. Please.. Please can we go?” She begged again softly. She didn’t want this to turn into a fight, because Andrew would win… he was bigger, and trained better… he was a cop, and he could even lock Jake away if he wanted to. As she spoke, Andrew slowly sat up, rubbing his jaw. Eden felt a bit of fear sliding into her as his eyes met her own, and they were cold, dark, and angry. Eden felt something detach in her in that moment, her hands leaving Jake’s shirt and falling to her side as she began breathing quickly, shallowly. That look wasn’t one she’d ever seen in his eyes before. And against everything, it scared her more than anything ever had in her entire life. She was frightened not just for herself, but mostly for Jake, especially as Andrew stood and walked towards him.
The conversation they had was lost on her as Eden stumbled back, falling onto the steps behind her and letting her head sink into her hands. Her entire body trembled ,and her vision swam before her eyes. Sounds and colors faded to gray silence, and she knew nothing but the anxiety swimming through her limbs. What seemed like forever later, an arm slid around her shoulders and helped her up, saying, ”It’s okay, Cassidy… I’ve got you now.” Eden’s eyes snapped up, and she yanked away from Andrew, gazing at him with wide and terrified eyes, ”No! S-stay… s-stay away from me. I’m not Cassidy. I’m not.” She told him vehemently, with more intensity than had ever mustered in her life. The soft spoken, gentle girl had a breaking point, and this was it. She wasn’t Cassidy, and in that moment, she wasn’t even Eden. She felt so utterly lost and deserted as her eyes wildly swung around for Jake, ”Where is he? What did you do to him?” She asked desperately, and Andrew smirked. ”He’s down at the jail, where he belongs for trying to take you, Cass. Now come he-”
Eden darted away before he could grasp her. No, she would not have that. She needed Jake, she needed him. Her feet carried her as fast as she could go, past Andrew, past the people who called out to her as the wind whipped through her hair. She honestly had no idea where she was going, but eventually, her feet brought her to the town jail, and she walked inside, breathing heavily, sweat pouring down her face. She walked to the front desk, ”Please.. Please help me. I need… I n-need to call… the police…” She breathed out, and someone handed her a phone. She picked it up, dialing nine-one-one, hoping to get a dispatcher that could help her. When a soft, but firm voice picked up, Eden just unloaded. She unloaded every single thing she could remember: about Jake, about Andrew, about the accident, about what had just happened. By the time she was done speaking, her voice was hoarse and tears had dried on her cheeks as the dispatcher told her that she would send help her way immediately, that she just needed to stay put and make sure her cell phone was on. Hanging up the phone, she looked at the police officer who had overseen her call and asked in a low, tremulous voice where Jake was, and the officer took a pair of keys off the wall and led her down a long hallway, to a door. After opening it, he led her inside, to a cell, and slid the keys in the lock, opening the door. Eden stepped forward, looking inside, and her body nearly gave out on her from relief.
”Jake… Jake, I’m so sorry… I’m so sorry.” She whispered, before moving forward as fast as she could and flinging herself into his arms. ”I’m so sorry… I love you… I love you so much…” Her hoarse voice broke with the intensity of the emotions flowing through her, and she clung to him with every single bit of strength she could muster, ”I called the police… I told.. I told them everything…” She told him, her vision swimming as she suddenly became dizzy. The entire day’s events were sending her into an overload, as she grew limper and limper in Jake’s arms. ”Everything is going to be okay.” She finally whispered, before sliding into a state of unconscious.

Truth be told, Jacob had very little experience with hitting people. He was in no way a violent person. His favorite form of solving problems was talking it over in a sane way. The only time he ever seemed to resort to physical violence was when someone he loved was threatened. In fact, the only time he'd gotten in a real fight had been way back in his freshman year, before he'd had his ordeal with the burning shed. His older brother had always been the quiet one of the two. He was pretty much everything that Jake wasn't. He was smart, withdrawn, and shy. Which meant that he would endure forms of bullying that Jake would never understand. The one time that scrawny little fourteen-year-old Jake had witnessed someone attacking his brother, well it made him furious. Before he knew what he was doing, he'd launched himself at the older boy, only to end up in the nurse's office with a swollen face and pissed off parents. But, at least he'd earned a little respect with his fellow classmates. But, really, violence never worked out for him. Which was mostly the reason he didn't bother with it. Still, when something like this happened, he doubted very highly that any talking was going to solve the situation.
The young man was aware of Eden's hold on his shirt and when he turned to face her, he hated the look that she was giving him. He nodded at her question. "Of course we can, Eden." He answered softly. But, that was when he heard the man stand, and immediately he turned back to him, stepping in front of Eden and clenching his fists once more. His right hand throbbed, but he barely noticed. He narrowed his eyes at the man in front of him. "Stay away from us." He commanded in a low tone, and he was disappointed to hear that most of the hatred had left his voice. He just wasn't good at being a hateful person. "You know, I can have you arrested. You shouldn't have done that." The other's voice cause Jake to glare even deeper. "You shouldn't have kidnapped my fiancé. How do you think the real police are going to react to that? Not so good, eh?" After the words left his mouth, Jacob realized that something wasn't right. He glanced over his shoulder and saw that Eden wasn't doing so well. His mistake was taking his eyes off of the man in front of him. A split second after he turned, he felt a blow hit his face so hard that he could have sworn that he'd just been struck with a metal pole.
He didn't even realize that he'd hit the ground until he felt the cool sidewalk underneath his cheek. The breath had been knocked out of him and he coughed and spluttered, trying to regain control. Vaguely, he heard the man calling for backup. When he shakily tried to stand again, blinking away his dizziness, he only made it to his hands and knees before he felt a blow to his abdomen. And just like that, he was on the ground again, out of breath once more. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he figured that this was what he got for trying to play the hero. Violence just wasn't the answer for him. "I wouldn't try getting up again." Came the gloating voice of the man that Jake would very much like to see falling off of a cliff at that point in time. "Don't you... touch her." He heard himself wheezing out. The answering laugh sent chills down his spine, along with a renewed anger through his body. Unfortunately for Jake, he wasn't exactly fully conscious, which was making it quite impossible to get up and wipe the inevitable smirk off of that bastard's face. Moment's later, he heard other voices and suddenly someone was grabbing his wrists, handcuffing them behind his back. "No... Eden." He said to the pavement before he was lifting to his feet. He staggered slightly before he was shoved into the back of a police car.
For the entire ride, Jacob was struggling to get himself together and to speak in fully formed sentences. No matter how much he tried to make the officers understand where he was coming from, they merely told him to keep quiet. Once they reached the jail, he was pulled out of the car and walked through the surprisingly cold halls of the jail. The police officer found a cozy little cell to dispose of him in and he stumbled inside. After a few moments, however, his senses had all but returned to him and he moved to the bars, shouting to someone, anyone to listen to him. Because Eden was in danger. She was in the hands of a psychopath. And no one would believe him! His frustration started mounting and he began to grow more and more restless. He started pacing in his cell, running a hand through his hair angrily. This wasn't fair. He needed to be with Eden. He needed to make sure she was alright. Finally, he plopped down on the cot and put his head in his hands. With a flinch, he pulled his hand back from the left side of his face. With a grimace, he realized that there was now blood on his hand. He had no idea what he looked like. Probably just wonderful. With a huge sigh, he stared down at the floor of the cell. What was he going to do? He was trapped in this stupid jail with no way to get to Eden.
And then all of a sudden, he heard keys jangling in the door. He looked up quickly and there she stood. "Eden!" He stood quickly, ignoring the slight dizziness that came with it. Then she was spewing apologies and launched herself at him. He wrapped his arms around her tightly, shaking his head. "No. Please don't. It's not your fault. None of this is your fault." Relief flooded through him when she told him that she'd told the police everything. Finally, someone had listened to common sense. Jacob felt Eden go limp in his arms and he clutched her tighter to keep from letting her fall to the floor. Moving backward, he sat down on the cot once again, pulling her up so she was laying in his lap. He had no doubt that everything that had happened had taken a toll on her. "Oh, Eden. I'm so sorry for everything. I'm sorry I let it happen to you." He spoke softly, gently brushing hair from her face. "Everything will be okay. I won't let him hurt you again." For a little while, he merely stared down at her sadly, wishing that there was more that he could do. However, until he was freed from his prison, he couldn't really do anything.
As if on cue, an officer opened his cell once more, declaring that he had a few questions for Jacob. All the young man wanted to do was to take Eden home, but he obliged, holding her limp form as he answered anything they asked him. Finally, after what seemed hours, he was allowed to leave. He was then taken to his car and he gently sat Eden inside before moving to the driver's side. He started the engine, but before he set out on his journey, he took a moment to let out his emotions. A long, low sigh escaped him and he rested his head on the steering wheel, closing his eyes. After a moment, he sat up again and started the drive. Things would be better once he got Eden home, that much he was sure of. He just needed to get Eden home. He finally did so after a painfully long drive. Gently, he carried Eden inside of their home and up to their bedroom. He laid her on the bed, removing her shoes and jacket. Briefly he wondered if he should do anything else for her, though he supposed at the moment that he should just let her sleep. And as exhausted as he was, he knew that there was no way he'd be joining her in the land of unconsciousness tonight. So, to avoid falling asleep, he pulled up the desk chair and sat in a deliberately uncomfortable position, watching Eden closely. It was probably going to be a long night, but he wasn't going to let someone take her again. Not again.

Eden wasn’t built to withstand trauma like this. The worst that had ever happened to her in her life was when her pet rabbit died when she was fifteen. She was such a gentle hearted person - anger was never an option, so when she had fallen in love with Jake, everyone had known it was a perfect match. The both of them together was a no brainer - he made her happy, and she made him happy. There were permanent smiles on their faces when they were together, and it was almost sickeningly cute how they were in public. That was what she needed. Jake was what she needed. It was only a matter of time before Andrew’s treatment of her would have pushed her to do something rash and foolish. She was ashamed to say, especially in the normless state she had been in, that she’d considered just ending things. Nothing could have been worse than the constant blackness she was living in already. Had Jake not rescued her from her prison, who knows what might have happened? She wasn’t made for this. Her heart, her body, her mind couldn’t take the emotional and mental stress, and she knew it.
God only knew that her state would have been ten times worse had she seen what Andrew was doing to Jake. She knew she almost had a heart attack when she came into his jail cell and saw his blood smeared face. She wasn’t sure what exactly it was that sent her over the edge, tumbling into the scary blackness she’d been trying to avoid for weeks now. But whatever it was came almost as a relief, because it was different now. She was in Jake’s arms.. She could rest easy. As long as she had known Jake, he had been her everything. Her lighthouse, her safe haven. She loved him with everything in her and would shout it from the roof tops if someone asked for her to. Forgetting that she loved him was like forgetting an important part of herself, and she knew that she would never allow it to happen again. No matter what it took, Eden would never forget her love for Jake again. As the dark waves of unconscious rolled over her, she relaxed completely into Jake’s arms. Her breath came out in a soft exhale, and finally she was sleep. She felt safe, untouchable. She felt, more than anything, like she was finally home again.
Of course, she didn’t know how long she was out for. It could have been minutes, it could have been hours. Eden was drifting in her own dreamland, and for once they weren’t nightmares. The memories of Jake that had once confused her now were like soft caresses. She knew now that this was her. This was who she was. For once, things felt like they might be okay. After she got over the stress and emotional trauma that was sure to plague her from all of this, that is. But she wouldn’t be worried by that. As long as Jake was by her side, she would be fine. She would be at least a little bit like herself again. It wouldn’t be easy, but she would get there, and they’d be married. She would be Eden Sofia Tyler, and she would be invincible… as long as she wasn’t away from Jake for more than five seconds, that was. Her dreams were slowly going from peaceful to more and more anxious… happy memories would turn sour when Jake would turn his back on her and start walking away, while she was frozen to the spot and unable to follow. The tone got steadily darker and darker, until finally Andrew was there. Right there, in her dreams. His eyes were cold, and a shiver tore through her. She opened her mouth to scream, but no sound came out. This was it. This was her new worst nightmare…
Her eyes flashed opened as she gasped softly. Eden blinked for a moment, her breathing slightly accelerated and her heartbeat rapid as she tried to work through the dream in her mind. She raised a trembling hand to brush her dark hair back from her face, before finally realizing where she was. This was home. Her and Jake’s room, to be exact. She looked to the side, expecting to find Jake beside her and surprised to find he wasn’t. A slow terror began to seep through her as she sat up anxiously, opening her mouth to speak but no sound coming out. She closed her mouth, swallowing, prepared to yell out for her love, her savior, when suddenly their bedroom door opened. She flinched and recoiled, half expecting her waking life to have become a nightmare, but instantly relaxed when Jake walked through the door. Her eyes instantly zoomed to that awful bruise on the side of his face, and her breath hissed out from between her teeth as she slowly crawled out of bed, feeling stiff and a little dizzy. ”Oh, Jake… “ she whispered softly, walking over to him on wobbly legs. Her eyes met his jaw line, almost as though she were too afraid to look up and meet his eyes. Then, slowly but surely, she lifted her gaze to meet his, and her breath was taken away by the depth of concern and love she saw there. This was home. Right here, in this moment, she was where she was supposed to be. ”Jake… are you okay?” She asked softly, concerned for him. His bruised face was worrying her - it looked swollen still, and she wasn’t sure if it was supposed to be that way. She hoped he hadn’t broken something, though the thought made her feel a little better, oddly; if he had, that was her Jake, for you. Always breaking something.

Unfortunately for the young man, Jacob could sadly say that he'd had to deal with a lot of traumatizing things in his life. More than the average person, anyway. While most of those experiences consisted of his fear of fire being exploited, he had to admit that this one was much worse. Worrying for Eden was like slow torture, as opposed to the adrenaline fueled terror that he'd felt for himself on those few occasions. This was lasting longer and was tearing him apart from the inside out. He would have much rather been tied down inside of a burning building then have to go through another day wondering if she was okay. So, when he finally did find her, he was going to do whatever it took to get her home safe and sound. If that meant getting beaten up by a guy who had serious issues, then it was well worth it. Nothing in the world meant more to Jake than Eden did. Not even his own life. He would gladly trade it for the knowledge that she would be safe. Maybe it had been a really stupid idea to attack a trained police officer, but he honestly hadn't cared. No one would be able to say such things to Eden and get away with it. Even if Jake did end up having more damage done to himself than he'd done to his opponent.
In the end, though, it seemed to have worked out. Jacob had managed to get Eden home, and aside from some emotional damage, she didn't seem to be too hurt. He did have to wonder if she would be okay. Eden was a very gentle creature. A person who wasn't used to the kind of treachery that normal humans could do. In his time with her, he'd tried his hardest to protect her from the true nature of people. But, it seemed like this time he had failed. If only he hadn't believed her when she'd told him the wrong date of her concert. If only he'd gone with her that night. This would have never happened. He would have been able to keep her safe. Jake ran a hand through his hair as he mulled it over in his mind. Eden was still fast asleep and he doubted very much that she would be waking any time soon. As his hand brushed his face, he realized that there was still blood on it. With a sigh, he stood, moving to the bathroom, closing the door and turning on the light. When he took in his reflection, he frowned deeply. It seemed that, through the blood, the left side of his face was slightly swollen and was already turning a hideous dark color. That police guy had delivered quite a blow.
It took him a few minutes to clean himself off, and all that remained was the bruising and a small cut when he was finished. Turning off the light once more, he went back to the bedroom and found Eden's still figure. He wondered briefly if she was dreaming and what it was about. At the moment, she seemed undisturbed, which was a good sign. A sudden and overwhelming urge to go lay by her took him by surprise and he began to move in her direction before stopping himself. If he laid down then, he knew for a fact that he would be out like a light in less than ten seconds. He needed to stay awake to watch over her. To make sure she was safe. So, he began to do things around the room that he'd neglected in his mini depression. He picked up clothes from the floor, straightened the dresser and spent a good while with his desk. He even started writing some lyrics that were bumping around in his head. As light started pouring into the room, the side of his face started throbbing and his stomach rumbled. For a moment, he was torn between leaving and staying in the room with her, just in case.
In the end, he knew that no one could fly through their windows, and so he moved downstairs and into the kitchen, grabbing some pain pills and rummaging around in the fridge for something quick to eat. When he'd scarfed down the cold, leftover pizza, he finally went back upstairs to check on Eden. When he opened the door, he was slightly surprised to see her sitting up. Concern instantly went through him as she stumbled towards him. He wrapped his arms securely around her, watching her closely as she studied his face. "I'm fine." He answered in a low, exhausted voice. He silently cursed himself for that. She wasn't going to believe him when he sounded like he hadn't gotten any sleep at all that night. "How are you? Are you okay? Are you hungry? I can make you something. Or if you need to sleep longer, that's fine. Whatever you need, Eden."
