“A lot of things come and go, but one thing that has remained constant is my love in you. For you. My love for you…” Eden closed her eyes, pressing a palm to her forehead. Why couldn’t she get any of these words right? She’d had her vows all memorized for weeks, and here she was the day of her wedding, and she couldn’t get them right? She looked down at herself with a sigh. Sweatpants and a sweatshirt, and her feet clothed by furry black slippers… she looked like she was heading for a day at home, not a wedding. She ran her hands anxiously through her hair, ignoring Tegan’s banging on her door.
“Eden! Hurry up! We have to leave for the church in twenty minutes! Are you presentable?!” Eden heard muffled whispering behind the door between Tegan and whom she assumed to be her best friend, Jake. Then, there was a much softer knock. Eden went to the door and opened it slowly, looking into her best friend’s face that was so much like her soon-to-be-husband’s. If someone asked her if it was weird, having two people who looked exactly like each other but not actually related being so close to her, she would have told them no. She had learned, like Tegan, Jake’s girlfriend and Colton’s best friend, to differentiate quickly and soon they didn’t even really look alike at all to her anymore. She could tell at a glance which was Jake’s bouncy and smooth gate, to Colton’s pigeon-toed and slightly clumsy walk. A smile lit up her face thinking about it, and suddenly her heart was going a thousand miles a minute. Eden didn’t even realize that she had lost herself to her thoughts, and she looked up at Jake who was watching her with his trademark grin.
“Whatchya thinkin’ about?” He asked, his accent making the words sound soft. Eden smiled, and said simply in response, “Colton.” Jake laughed, nodding his head, “Figured as much, mate, from that smile. But, as much as I’d like to let you sit here and dawdle, we need to go to the church. Tegan said she’d hurt me if I didn’t hurry up and get you, which I find slightly abusive. Don’t you find that slightly abusive? Anyway, we really should get going.” Eden couldn’t help but laugh at little at his rapid talk, and she felt her nerves relax a little at the familiarity of it. She nodded, “Okay. Okay, let’s go.”
The entire drive out to the church, Eden tapped her fingers on her thigh. When she got there, she’d be wrapped up in the flurry of the day. The moment. The moment she was going to marry Colton Mercer. Her heart beat accelerated and the tapping of her fingers stopped as her breath caught. She honestly couldn’t imagine ever wanting anyone but him. He completed her in the best possible way, filled up every hollow spot, even the ones that she hadn’t even realized were needing to be filled. Every time he smiled, she smiled because of how beautiful it was. His eyes were the most intoxicating and deep oceans she could think of, and he had a brilliant soul and heart. The corners of her lips turned upwards with the extreme contentment and happiness of her thoughts. It was obvious to anyone that looked at her that she was lost in her mind as she went from station to station on autopilot – fixing her hair, fixing her make-up. When her mind finally snapped to in the moment, she gazed around. Finally, her eyes found Tegan. The feisty blond was dressed still in jeans and a button up shirt, but her short hair was curled elegantly and held back by pins in an intricate hair style, and her make-up accented her pretty face perfectly. In her hands was a video camera, and Eden instantly frowned at it.
“What’s that for?!” She exclaimed, not exactly sure whether or not she wanted these moments to be filmed. Tegan grinned at her, “Filming the gorgeous blushing bride before the ceremony, of course. I don’t know, don’t ask me to explain it. Jake has to do it with Colton, too.” At the sound of her beloved’s name, she swallowed, her heart picking up pace as she gazed at Tegan with wide eyes. Her voice was whisper soft when she asked, “Colton’s here?” Tegan nodded, and Eden had to swallow again. He was here… that could only mean…
Her eyes swung to the clock. An hour. An hour left until it all started. Eden jumped to her feet, “Oh my God. Oh my God, I’m getting married.” Her cousin Annie, one of her brides maids, instantly was at her side, patting her back to get her to calm down. But Eden was far past the calming down stage at that point. Tegan sighed, saying to Annie, “I suggest you back away from her. She’s about to have her pre-wedding freak out.” Suddenly she cackled, saying under her breath, “And I get to be the one who catches it all on camera. Colton, when you watch this, you better thank me.” She said to the camera, pointing at herself and giving it a patent Tegan look, before swinging it back to Eden.
It wasn’t that she was scared – no, far from that. She was ecstatic that she was going to be marrying Colton. But it was happening, finally happening. It wasn’t just a wish in the back of their minds. It was going to happen, and it was going to happen in one hour. Eden had to pause and take a few deep breaths. She was getting married to the man she loved with her whole being. Their own piece of forever was finally going to begin. Tears pricked her eyes, and she gasped, “Oh!” She knew that if she cried, she’d mess up all her make-up. Tegan sighed, and promptly said, “Eden, if you cry, I will hurt you. You are going to mess up your make-up! At least wait until after you say your vows?” It was obvious from her tone of voice that she knew that was a losing battle, but what could she do? Eden nodded tremulously, valiantly trying to stop her lower lip from trembling and succeeding. Tegan sighed, walking over to her and gently dabbing at the stray tears that managed to fall, giving her a gentle smile.
“Eden, I just want to say this before we go out there. And you gotta promise that you won’t cry if I do, okay?” She told her firmly, as she set the camera down on the table, taking Eden’s shoulders and gazing into her eyes. “I am so happy that you and Colton found each other. You have no idea how much you’ve changed him, for the better. I am so glad this is you walking down the aisle to meet him today, that you’re the person that’s going to be Mrs. Colton Mercer.” She’d give her a shaky smile, having to swallow. Eden was surprised that Tegan, the invincible Tegan, was getting emotional on her! But, she’d have to worry about that later. She was too busy concentrating on not crying. She watched Tegan swallow hard, and suddenly the blonde flashed her a smile, shoving her emotions aside like she always did and standing straighter. “And, for the record,” She began, smiling gently at Eden, “You look absolutely beautiful. Colton is going to drop dead when he sees you.” That made Eden giggle, which helped her blink the tears away, “I hope not,” Eden told her, “Because that would be some really bad luck.” Tegan laughed, and nodded her head in agreement, “Good point. Now, let’s get your dress on, okay?”
With that, Annie came over to her with the garment bag, and together they got Eden inside the gorgeous dress she had gotten for the wedding. After about a half an hour of fussing with it, they finally got it perfect. Eden’s heart was beating a mile a minute. In less than twenty five minutes, she would walking down the aisle with Colton. Less than twenty-five. Eden suddenly felt hot. She grabbed a paper and began to fan herself slowly, closing her eyes. Slowly, the seconds began to pass and she didn’t even notice. She was in a less stressful place, a place where it was calm and cool. Her and Colton, alone. The scene was their meadow… Eden could lose herself in the idea for hours, and might have had she not felt a rough hand catch her elbow. Her dark, glazed eyes opened and she focused slowly on her father, who was looking on the verge of tears.
“Daddy.” Eden whispered, grabbing his hand and holding on tight. He gave her a shaky smile, “You look so beautiful, my precious baby girl. Your mother would be so proud.” Eden had to blink the tears away fiercely, and suddenly she felt Jake by her side, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and squeezing in comfort. She cast him a grateful look, and was about to say something when the wedding planner they had hired came bustling through the curtained area, “Okay, the groom is out there. Grooms’ men and brides’ maids, pair up like we did last night. Walk in beat to the music, then the bride makes her entrance.”
Every nerve in Eden’s body went off in that moment, and she gasped softly. She looked into Jake and Tegan’s face as they both kissed her cheeks and told her she looked gorgeous, before hustling to the front of the line. The music started, and her heart took off as Jake and Tegan, as best man and maid of honor, stepped out onto the aisle. The wedding had officially started. To comfort her, Mr. Lucitania patted her hand, kissing her temple. Then, suddenly, before she could even blink, it was her turn to walk. The fanfare began, and Eden closed her eyes to steady herself as her father guided her forward. When she opened her eyes and looked out upon the gorgeous meadow, all the guest’s seats lined up, standing, looking back at her… She blushed deeply, looking down for a split second, before raising her eyes to find Colton. It didn’t take long, and the second she saw his awestruck face, her lips split into a wide and exultant smile, and she ached to just run to him and wrap her arms around him. However, her father at her side helped her keep the pace, and soon they were at the altar. Her father took her hand, and placed it in Colton’s, and her eyes closed when she felt his warm skin.
All at once, they were the only two people in the meadow. The only two people in the universe. Eden opened her eyes, and met his own as he lifted up her veil, and she had to blink tears fiercely away, the smile so wide on her face that she felt like it was going to split. The words the pastor was saying totally went in one ear and out the other as she hungrily gazed at his face, lost in it, in every perfection. That scar, which she learned that Tegan had given him when they were younger, to his full, slightly chapped lips. His thick eyebrows, and the stubble the graced his chin and upper lip. His hair was down perfectly, and her fingers ached to go through it… finally, however, were his eyes. They were glazed over, like her own, the most perfect dreamer’s hazel. Her heart stuttered, then started beating at a pace ten times faster than it was before. It seemed like he was just as lost in her eyes as she was in his, which was, to her, a miracle in itself. She had no idea what was so captivating about her - she was nothing spectacular, just average. To have garnered the attentions of someone as beautiful and hilarious and loving as Colton was just… impossible. But, she wasn’t one to fight fate. They were made for each other, of that much she was certain. It was impossible to deny the way their fingers fit perfectly, how they fit perfectly. She was a perfect compliment to him, and vice versa, and now they were making it permanent. She would forever be with him, as he would be with her, and Eden couldn’t have been more ecstatic.
She was lost in that thought when suddenly she became conscious of her name being called. Her face flushed as she flinched a little, tearing her eyes reluctantly away from Colton. She could hear their guests chuckle, and she blushed deeply, looking down. “Please state your vows.” The priest repeated gently, giving her a smile. Her heart leaped to her throat, and she look at Colton, her eyes connecting with his, “This part already?” She said, which garnered another laugh from the crowd and she blushed, not realizing she had said it out loud. Finally, she inhaled deeply, squeezing Colton’s hands, and opening her mouth to speak.
“Il mio cuore, you know that you are the most important thing in my life. Every morning when I wake up, and I feel you holding me, I thank God for making me so lucky.” She’d give him a shaky smile, a tear sliding down her cheek. She wiped it away anxiously, laughing a little, before continuing, “I love you.” She said fervently, pausing to let the passion behind her words sink in, “More than anything in my life, more than my own existence. We’ve often talked about fate, and how we found each other purely by chance, how we’re made for each other.” She’d break of, swallowing hard, “Not a day goes by where I don’t thank God for leading me to my other half. Things were scary for a while…” She’d say, obviously getting a little choked up for a moment as she paused, looking down for a second to gather herself, before continuing in a shaky voice, “But I always knew that I would be standing right here in front of you someday. About to get married. About to make the promise of a lifetime. So, here it is. Here is my promise to you. I promise to love you every single day of my life, and every day after. I promise to… to hold you, to take care of you, to make you laugh when you feel like crying.” More tears fell down her cheeks, but she couldn’t break her gaze away from Colton. It was far too connected, too intense, so she could only speak what was on her heart. Suddenly, what she had written seemed a thousand miles away - this wasn’t planned. This was simply everything she longed to say, instead of words that had been memorized, “And I promise to be a good wife to you. To support you and cherish you in every way you deserve. I promise to be a good mother to your children, who I know are going to be just as clumsy as you are.” She’d tease, laughing past her tears, her voice nothing but raspy with the deep affection and honesty that came with her words, “I promise you all of these things, and I promise never to break my promises. You can trust me with everything - your heart, your mind, your soul, your life. I’ll never let them break. So… I guess what I’m really just trying to say is, Colton Mercer, that I love you. Always and forever. There is nothing in the world that could ever change my mind. I love you. And I am so honored that today I get to become your wife.” She swallowed past more tears, her voice cracking throughout the last few sentences of her speech. She could see a couple of his own tears falling, and she couldn’t resist reaching up to gently brush them away, her shoulders shaking with her own tears. But still, that smile on her face couldn’t be erased, and her heart simply swelled. She loved Colton. She loved him more than anything, anything at all. She glanced behind his shoulder, and her eye caught Tegan’s, who just so happened to be wiping away tears of her own. She gave Eden a thumbs up, and she smiled, relieved but of course, in her true Eden way, slightly guilty. She hadn’t meant to make anyone cry! But, she was snapped out of her guilt trip when the pastor spoke, and her eyes snapped to Colton’s again. Time for his vows. She tried to prepare herself best she could for them, but she knew she wouldn’t be able to start the waterworks when they came. That was simply impossible. So, she just settled for gripping his hands like he was the last person in the world that was holding her there.
In all honesty, he was. And that just made her love him that much more.

Gentle music sounded through the empty rooms of the apartment. The source of it, the lone occupant, sat on the edge of his bed, eyes closed. A guitar sat across his lap and his fingers were plucking softly at random notes. One would never guess where he was about to head. Truthfully, this was his way of fighting off the nerves. When he had music, everything was easier to deal with. Even pre-wedding jitters. His moment of peace was soon shattered, however, by the sound of a young woman calling out his name. "Colton! Colton Mercer, you'd better be ready! We are leaving!" He simply kept his eyes closed, letting out a low sigh before he knew she'd entered his room. "Colton, this is no time for writing songs! You don't want to be late to your own wedding, do you?" Finally, hazel eyes were revealed and he found the newcomer's gaze. Tegan Johnson was his best friend, his best man, and one of the main reasons he was still around to have a wedding at all. In response to her question, he simply shook his head. Colt didn't dare trust himself to speak at the moment. He'd already had a losing battle with his nausea once this morning. He didn't need a repeat. Taking a deep breath, he sat the guitar into it's case and stood. He was aware of Tegan eyeing him as he grabbed what little he would need for the day. Everything he was going to wear was at the meadow. Currently, he was adorned with a simple tee shirt, jeans, and a pair of his favorite nike's. When he turned back to the blonde who was waiting for him, he caught a strange expression on her features. "Are you okay?" She asked him. He heard the amusement, but also the concern in her voice. He simply nodded, starting forward so they could leave.
He moved down the hall and out of the door at a steady pace as Tegan rattled off beside him. "We better not be late. Jake has already taken Eden..." If she said anything after that, Colton didn't hear. At the mention of his fiancé's name, his heart pounded loudly in his ears. He was vaguely aware of getting in Tegan's car and sliding so far down in the seat that he was in danger of falling to the floor. "Are you sure you're okay?" Tegan's voice flooded into his mind again and he looked over at her, nodding once more. "Stop being so quiet! It's freaking me out!" Colton then swallowed and took in a breath. "Sorry." He muttered in a slightly shaky voice. He looked away again when Tegan began to frown at him. "Let's just go." He spoke again. He heard her make a displeased noise before she obeyed. A small smile crept on his face at the sound. His best friend didn't need to worry, though. He really was fine. He was excited, anxious, nervous, nauseous, ready to jump out of the window of the moving car, but he was fine. This was the day that he'd been looking forward to for a long time. Longer than he'd originally realized. It was a day that, at one point in time, he'd thought would never happen. Was he happy? Of course he was. In fact, it was a large understatement. His memories of the past year and a half had been overwhelming him, though, and it had caused him to turn into the slightly catatonic version of himself that Tegan was currently ushering into the area he would be getting married.
Married. Married, married. The words echoed in his thoughts, and as he was pushed into where he'd be changing, he barely even noticed his surroundings. Colton was far too lost in his own mind to be paying attention to much of anything. Even as he got dressed, he didn't really see all of the ridiculous garments he was putting on. Finally, when he was dressed, he blinked and stared at his reflection in the mirror. He looked decent, he supposed. He definitely looked as if he was going to get married. His stomach threatened to attack him once more, and he clutched at it, closing his eyes and taking deep breaths. There was nothing left to come out, but dry heaving was oftentimes just as unpleasant. He wondered briefly what Eden was thinking that very moment. Was she just as nervous as he was? Was she having second thoughts? The question chilled him to the bone. Because, there wasn't a single doubt in young Colton's mind that this was what he wanted. Eden was the only person he would ever feel this way about. He wanted her forever. As selfish as it was, it was true. She'd said before that she felt the same way, and Colton knew that Eden always meant what she said. Still, the prospect of getting married was daunting, even for someone so unbreakable as they were. Finally, Colton opened his eyes. As he did, he caught sight of something strange in the mirror. Turning, he found the culprit. "Jacob! Why is there a camera in my face right now?" It wasn't that he was unhappy to see his Australian friend. He was just not very pleased at him taping something that was a very personal moment for Colton. Jake, who happened to be Tegan's boyfriend, and who also happened to look exactly like Colton, didn't seem to notice the animosity. In fact, he just laughed. "Don't ask me, mate. I'm just following orders." Colton raised an eyebrow at him. "Orders?"
Jake nodded, the grin never leaving his face. "I was told to get these precious few moments on tape. Don't worry, it's just for Eden to see. So you little love birds can look back on the moment and go 'awww.' or whatever it is you two do." Despite all of the raging emotions Colton was currently feeling, he found himself laughing at his friend's idiotic comment. "Okay. Just... no creepy close ups or anything." Jake's grin merely grew and he continued to film, concentrating on every action Colton made. Which, he had to admit, were probably highly amusing. Jake's giggles certainly proved that. Colton couldn't help pacing, fidgeting with his tux every two seconds, and having small breathing problems. Said problems caused him to stop and lean forward, hands on his knees, until he could catch his breath. At one point, Jake did lower the camera and gave Colt a serious look. Something the young man didn't do very often. "Just so you know, Eden is lucky to have you. You two are perfect for each other." And a split second later, the camera was back in place. Colton couldn't help a small smile at Jacob's words, though. "Thanks." He managed to say before going back to his pacing.
Despite the distraction of the camera, young Mister Mercer's mind was not in the room. No, it was at the altar he would soon be standing in front of. When he'd be watching Eden walk down the aisle. He didn't know what her dress looked like. Somehow, it had all managed to stay hidden from him. But, he knew that she was going to look incredible. She could walk down that aisle wearing a potato sack and still be the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen. Checking his cell phone, Colt found that there was merely ten minutes until he had to take his place beside the priest. Ten minutes until everything began. Ten minutes until he could finally marry Eden. He could remember so clearly the day he'd bought the ring. He'd brought Tegan along after she promised not to hint to Eden what he was up to. It turned out that he hadn't even needed her there. He'd known which was the perfect ring as soon as he laid eyes on it. It was simple, yet beautiful, just like his wife-to-be. Colton had not had that ring for more than a week before he'd been diagnosed with cancer. After that, everything had shifted, and suddenly, he hadn't been sure if he'd even get to use the ring. Yet, here he was, moments before the one ceremony he'd ever actually not mind dressing up for. Right then, he was no longer nervous or afraid. He was ready.
This was when Jake disappeared and Colton was left alone. That is, until his mother slipped into view. As soon as she saw him, a proud smile lit up her features. "Oh, my baby boy, you look so handsome." Colton felt his face flush slightly. "Thanks, mom." He replied in an abashed tone. She strode over to him, fiddling with his tux and smoothing out invisible creases. "I came to tell you that you need to go out there now." Her voice was small, and he could tell she was holding back tears. He bit his lip, then moved forward to hug her tightly. "I love you, mom. Please don't cry." He heard her sniffle as she hugged him back. "I can't help it. My baby is getting married. I'm supposed to cry. It's the law." He let out a soft laugh. "Whatever you say, mom." He heard her take in a breath and then speak once more in a whisper. "I'm so proud of you." After a moment, he pulled back and gave her a smile, suddenly having to fight back his own tears. Colton had rarely ever seen his mother cry. This was a big thing. So, as she pushed him out to the altar, he barely even noticed all of the guests. He was too busy gazing at the scenery. They had chosen this place because it resembled his and Eden's favorite getaway in Italy. At the moment, he felt as if he could actually be there. The thought brought a grin to his face that he couldn't seem to get rid of. Even as Tegan and his groomsmen filed into their positions, or the music started, cuing the arrival of the bride. It was only when he saw her that it finally disappeared, replaced by a look of utter wonder, love, and amazement. He'd been right, she was beautiful.
Her gaze found his and Colton could have sworn that every other person disappeared. She was the only one there, and he couldn't look away from her, even if he wanted to. Excitement rose up in him again. With every step that she took, his heart beat faster and faster. It was a lifetime before she made it to him, but it took no time at all. Eden's father handed her to Colton and at her touch, white fire went through him, burning and lovely. He could do nothing but stare at her. Trembling hands lifted her veil, revealing her true, staggering beauty. For a moment, his breath caught in his throat. How had he gotten so lucky? How had he managed to be able to claim the most amazing creature on the entire planet? All too soon, Eden was being asked to state her vows. Colton heard the soft laugh of the crowd as she'd apparently not heard the priest when he spoke. He merely offered her a reassuring smile, knowing she was just as lost in him as he was in her. His smile widened as she spoke, and he fought the urge to kiss her head comfortingly. Instead, he took a deep breath and prepared himself for the battle to stay together. The very first words of her speech sent a shiver down his spine. The special nickname she only reserved for him. It was all he could do to stay still as she continued. His loving smile grew with every statement. He could feel his own eyes starting to swim, but he blinked to fight it. He couldn't lose control. Not now. Otherwise, he'd never get through this. Even so, he couldn't stop a few tears from escaping. Which, of course, she moved to wipe away. He'd been avoiding that same action with her own tears and her motion caused a small laugh to escape him. Her speech was over, he could tell. He closed his eyes for a moment, taking in a deep breath. This was it. It was his turn. He could do this.
Colton opened his eyes, finding hers easily. He opened his mouth, and for a moment he was afraid nothing would come out. However, he was pleasantly surprised when his own voice sounded in his ears. It was shaky, but it was there. "Eden." He started, taking another breath. "I'm not really good with words when they don't rhyme, so... this might sound... kind of lame." He was struggling already. He couldn't do that. Eden gave him a reassuring smile and he found the will to go on. "I honestly don't know what to say to you that you don't already know. And... and it's really hard to put into words what I feel about you." He paused, shaking his head slowly. She had no idea how hard. "We've known each other for a good year and a half, and in that time you've seen more sides to me than anyone else could ever hope to glimpse. And I don't regret any of it. I used to wish that some things hadn't happened to us, because they were painful or scary. But... now I realize that they've helped make us become who we are. Strong. Unbreakable. I know that there's nothing in the world that could make me love you any less. You're my strength, my solitude. You're the air that I breathe. You're everything, Eden. Everything I could ever want or need." He had to pause again. He was starting to choke up, and he could see that she was having an even worse time. Colton continued in a low voice, determined to finish. "I know that in the past I've been stupid, and I've made a lot of mistakes that hurt you. But, from now on, I promise to do nothing but make sure you're happy... and safe and loved. Because there's nothing else that I want in my life. Nothing means anything without you. You are what keeps me going. Whenever you smile, I want to smile, too. Whenever you laugh, I hear the most beautiful music on earth." This was getting harder and harder, but he fought hard against his emotions. They were just going to have to wait. It didn't matter that tears were falling freely down his face, or that Eden's figure was blurring, no matter how many times he blinked. He was going to finish this. He was going to let her know how much he cared. "In fact... I r-remember the first time I heard you laugh." He gave his own laugh. "That... that day we met in the park. I asked to show you around. ...You only laughed a little... but it was enough for me to realize that I wanted to hear it every day for the rest of my life. Though, if you'd asked me then... if we'd be right here right now, I would have said no. Because... because, even from that first moment, I knew you were too good for me. You are the single most beautiful person on the planet. Inside and out. ...I love you, Eden. I know those words pale in comparison to what I really feel, but it's all I can think to say." He took another deep breath. "So, this is me... telling you that I am going to take care of you... and give you all of me, every single part... for the rest of time."
Finally, his speech was over. As he blinked through his tears, he saw that Eden was barely standing, she was having a tougher time of keeping herself together than he was. Which was pretty bad. Suddenly, he was aware of the rings being brought to them. He clumsily fumbled with hers, somehow managing to slide it on her finger. His hand shook as he held it out for her to slide on his as well. The cool metal felt good on his skin, and in that moment, he knew he'd never take it off. He looked up to Eden once again, the words "I now pronounce you husband and wife." floating into his ears. And he laughed. He was now married. Married to the woman of his dreams. He leaned forward to kiss her, the first kiss they were to share as a married couple. It was wet and deep and passionate and loving. For a moment, he never wanted to pull back, but finally he did. Her eyes were the only thing he could see. Distantly, he heard cheering and clapping, and he even thought he heard Tegan shouting "Yes!" But, none of it mattered. "I love you, Eden Mercer." He whispered, before pressing his lips to hers once more.
