Lucas Montague would never tell you his life was perfect. He'd had a lot of ups and downs in the past. Though, he could say, he was happy with where he was at this moment. He was currently in a car with his girlfriend, on a little road trip that they'd planned to take their minds off of things. If you'd asked him a year ago who would be riding shot gun at this moment, it would not have been the correct answer. His ex fiance was probably with her own boyfriend. A guy that Lucas was finally starting to approve of. It was hard to properly judge someone when you feel as if they'd stolen the love of your life. Except, Lucas had been dead wrong. Cassie had been his first love, it was true. And the young man would never regret what they had. But, the love of his life was none other than his best friend, Lily Pine. If Cassie hadn't fallen in love with someone else, Luke would have never known the true potential that he and Lily had. So, in a way, he was thankful to the brunette girl who had held his heart for most of his life. He certainly no longer hated her for it, like he had at first. It wasn't until he had grown much closer to Lily that he'd learned that she'd been in love with him practically since they'd met. He'd honestly had no clue, too wrapped up in Cassie. He felt bad about not knowing for so long. He couldn't count how many times he'd confided in Lily, or told her how great it was to be with Cassie, to have her all to himself. Lucas couldn't imagine what had been going through the blonde's mind during those times and he couldn't help but feel guilty for everything he'd said.
Still, he knew the past was the past and that Lily was happy now. Or, rather, she'd been happy until Lucas had let her get hurt. She'd developed a stalker and Luke had thought his threats would be enough to get him to leave her alone, but he'd been dead wrong. Coming home to find the house a mess and Lily gone had been the single most frightening moment in his life. Which was saying something, as it had a lot to compete with. He could confidently say that in that moment, he'd been more afraid than he'd been during the entire time he'd been a prisoner of war. And there were things that had gone on there that, to this day, he would not talk about. Losing Lily, though, that was much worse. He'd known how unstable the man had been and his mind had been conjuring up so many terrible images during the few days that she was gone that he'd almost driven himself insane. Finally, he'd found her, however. It had literally taken all of his strength not to kill the man who'd taken her. One thing about being trained to kill, it was a lot easier for him than most people realized. Underneath his soft demeanor and gentle heart, he had the ability to take someone's life. And killing that man would not be the first time he'd done it. Still, Lucas had known that getting Lily out was more important than his revenge, and he'd found her and taken her to the hospital as quickly as he could. When he'd learned what had happened to her, it had been a little challenging to keep his temper in check, but he'd done it for her.
It was roughly a month after Lily had come home from the hospital, and Lucas had decided that taking some time away would be good for her. She'd been nothing but jumpy and paranoid since she'd been home. It pained him to see her like that, knowing that there was only so much he could do to help. Maybe this would give her what she needed to finally get better again. As he drove, his left hand was on the steering wheel, and his right was in hers, fingers laced. He would glance over at her every few minutes just to look at her, and to make sure she was still okay. The ride itself had been easy and relaxing so far, though. And he was thankful. However, he should have known better than to think it would go smoothly the entire time. Quite suddenly, he felt the car lurch and the engine die. They came to a slow stop as smoke billowed from under the hood and he looked to Lily. "Well, that can't be good. Stay here, I'll look at it." Truthfully, Lucas knew next to nothing about cars and he wasn't sure what exactly he was looking for. Once he managed to get the hood up, he frowned down at the mechanical parts in front of him. The young man didn't even know what half of them were. This was going to prove difficult.
