She couldn't make heads or tails of this situation. It seemed no matter how hard she tried, Colton seemed to just keep avoiding her. She'd call him, he wouldn't pick up. She'd leave a message, he wouldn't call her back. Sometimes she'd catch him online, and while sometimes he acted very rude (which confused her, because it wasn't like him), he mostly acted distant. Eden Lucitania couldn't understand this wall that had all of a sudden been thrown up between them. She had a feeling it was all her fault, however. ever since she'd told Colton that she loved him.... things had gotten more complex between them. It seemed simple to her. It was obvious in his actions, when he was around her, that he loved her, too. People who saw them together told her that they seemed like the perfect couple: cute, adoring of each other. Her aunt commented that they were slightly like magnets, they always seemed pulled to each other. Truthfully, Eden didn't mind any of these comparisons or comments, because she knew that they were true, and she loved that. But lately, they'd been none of those things. They'd not talked to each other for almost four days, and it was killing the poor girl's gentle heart. Four days since she told him she loved him, and he hadn't returned the sentiment. Four days of silence and contemplation: had she done the right thing? Or had she just messed up the most important thing in her life? Eden's heart was breaking, and soon she found she just couldn't take it anymore. It wasn't in the girl, normally, to be confrontational. While she was bold and forward at times, she hated fighting about things, but this couldn't avoided. She needed to know why Colton was avoiding her, so she could try and fix whatever was wrong with her. Because it couldn't be his fault that this was happening, it must have been something she had done, and she had to fix it. She couldn't lose him. Eden walked to his apartment, it wasn't far from her home, and raised a slender fingered hand to rap quickly on the door. She bit her lip as she waited for him to answer, growing slightly impatient. She put her hand on the handle, twisting it, watching as it opened. "Colt?" She called out softly, stepping inside his home, and shutting the door gently behind her. "Where are you?" She asked, biting her lip. She prayed this went well. She prayed they wouldn't fall apart. She needed him. STATUS: finished! TAGGED: colton adam mercer OUTFIT: hurr! There was currently no doubt in Colton Mercer's mind that he was the stupidest human being on the planet. How he'd managed this feat, he would never know. But somehow he'd ended up screwing screwing with his life to the point that he wondered if it would ever be the same again. But it wasn't just that. Because his life wasn't the only one he was screwing with. He was hurting someone else as well. Someone very important to him. However, no matter how he looked at the situation, he couldn't seem to a happy ending to it. Why had he let himself get so close to her? He should have known it would end up this way. The first time he saw her should have been the last. If it had, she would be completely oblivious to how much of an idiot he really could be. Colton had let his emotions get in the way. He'd fallen for her hard and fast. But when she'd told him that she loved him, it had almost been like a slap in the face. And he'd started to panic. Not because he was afraid of loving her. In fact, he was very much aware that he did. But she couldn't love him. He would only end up hurting her. Which he'd proved already. Colt wouldn't allow her to get sucked into his problems. She was far too good for that. The young man knew he shouldn't have let it get to this point. He should have cut it off long before now. But there was really no way to go back, was there? And so he was currently doing the best he could to get her to forget he ever existed. He would ignore her calls, make sure he wasn't where he knew she would be, and he even tried not to get online as much. At first, this hadn't seemed like a problem, but she'd learned how to use a computer. And then there were the times that he couldn't escape her. For some god forsaken reason, he seemed to be high most of these instances. Which was just what he'd been trying to keep her from. However, he'd been getting high a lot more lately. Ever since he'd decided to try and distance himself from her. It was the very reason he was pushing her away, but it was the only thing he could find comfort in when she was gone. As sickening as this was, it didn't make it any less true. In fact, it was what he was doing at this very moment. The needle was even still in his arm as he heard her soft voice calling his name. He jumped in surprise, tearing the needle out of his arm and ripping off the tourniquet. She couldn't catch him like this. Not like this. Leaving everything on his bed, he almost ran out of his room, not getting the full effect of the drugs until he was past the threshold of the door. His already bloodshot eyes found hers and instant irritation flooded through him. "Eden. What the hell are you doing here? Don't you know how to knock?" This was not the greeting he would have given her any other time, but with the drugs so freshly pumping through his veins, all he had left for was anger.

Eden couldn't understand his mood swings. She didn't understand what she possibly could have done so wrong that all of a sudden, he wanted her out of his life. Eden had always thought that back in Italy, she'd been happy. However, she hadn't truly known what the meaning of happy was until she met Colton. He quickly became everything to her, perhaps one of the downfalls of being so inexperienced was that she fell way too fast. She had practically been in love with him by the end of their first meeting. Of course, why shouldn't she have been? He had been charming, kind, funny, and unafraid of taking her under his wing and showing her around. Their friendship budded into something more so quickly it had left her breathless, and soon the fact that she loved Colton was satring her right in the face, for better or for worse. Lately, all it had been was for the worse. He had been so rude to her on almost all the occasions they had bumped into each other. She didn't understand what she had done to garner such animosity from him. Had anyone else run into Colton at any of these times, like his friends Kellan or Alex, they would have known immediately that something was wrong with him. Maybe even known that he was doing drugs, probably because they'd been exposed to it before. This culture knew what someone on drugs looked like; the culture eden had grown up in hadn't. She didn't know that there was reason for Colton acting this way, which just led to her being so confused and hurt. It showed in her eyes, when her slightly dazed chocolate gaze met his. She flinched at his words, almost as if he had slapped her, swallowing. Why? Why was he this way? The unjustness of it hit her very suddenly, and for once, Eden felt an unfamiliar emotion pulsing through her: anger. Her beautiful eyes narrowed slightly, and her voice came out a bit harsher than normal, the accent sharp instead of soft and gentle like a caress. "I did knock, but you were too busy avoiding me to answer." She told him, crossing her arms gingerly over her chest. "What's wrong with you, Colton? What's wrong with me, that you've been acting this way? Why..." Her voice trailed off, as suddenly her anger slipped away, replaced only by sadness and weariness. She raised her eyes to his once more, shaking her head. "What did I do wrong?"

It was a shame, really. That Colton was currently putting Eden through what he'd been trying so very hard to avoid. The only reason he'd suddenly seemed to want nothing to do with her was so she would be able to realize that she didn't need him and that she was actually much better off without him. Maybe it was stupid of him to try such a thing. But he didn't want to lead her down a dark path. It had already been hard enough hiding his bad habits from her. He'd lied about parties that he went to, or what he was doing with his money. It was easier to lie to his parents than it was to her. Which was sad. Colt had always been a horrible liar. He just wasn't cut out for it. And he was shocked that Eden hadn't seen through everything. Then again, Eden was such a naive and gullible creature. Part of the reason he knew he had to stay away from her. He didn't want to hurt her, ruin her, or do anything that would make her any different than she was. The young woman was simply perfect. And Colton, well he was very far from it. As much as he cared for her, he had to let her go. But it was just so hard. Not to mention the fact that she wasn't exactly realizing anything he'd hoped she would. She was always calling, always trying to get him to talk to her. She didn't understand how hard it was for him to be as distant as he was with her. And she certainly wasn't making it any easier. Not that he would expect her to. If he was going to do this, he might as well feel the bitter touch that came with it. Colt just wished there was some way to keep her from feeling the pain. She was such a gentle person, and when she cared she did it with all of her heart. Which was what sucked the most about this entire ordeal. But as he stood before her, wavering slightly, all of his true feelings for her were stuck behind a wall of drugs. He didn't notice the hurt in her eyes at his words, or the way she seemed to grow defiant, but he heard the anger in her voice and it almost cause a sensation of regret. Almost. "Maybe I'm avoiding you for a reason. Ever think of that?" His words were equally harsh, almost as if he were speaking to someone who had no idea what they were talking about. Blinking several times so that Eden's figure was not quite so blurry, he listened to her next question. There were many things wrong with him. He didn't even know where to start. But the whole reason he'd been avoiding her was so he wouldn't have to tell her. He faltered with her last, heartbreaking question. "You didn't do anything, Eden." His tone was still harsh. He went on, not answering her questions. "You're just too... innocent. And I'm not. But you just can't seem to get it through your head to leave me alone."

What Colton didn't seem to realize was that he was stuck with Eden whether he liked it or not. He had quickly become the glue that held her together, and without him, she was rapidly falling apart. She didn't always have a smile on her face anymore, that was one thing most people noticed, especially in the last few days. While she didn't lose her temper with anyone -namely because she didn't have a temper to lose- she was very quiet, very self contained and contemplative. She didn't know what she wanted to do, because she didn't know what Colton would end up doing. Talk to her? Avoid her? At this point, anyone's guess was as good as hers. The only thing she could do was wait, and Eden had never really been good at waiting when everything hung on the balance. When the person that meant everything to her might be on the verge of walking away from her forever. That was the only reason in her mind that he would be avoiding her. Was if he wanted out. And if he wanted out, Eden didn't know what she was going to do. The pitfalls of having such a heart as hers, of having the pure love she contained. She didn't think she'd ever be able to stop loving Colton, so if he left... it would just be her suffering through the tangles of unrequited love, which would never go away. His harsh words had her crossing her arms over her chest, as if to keep her heart from being torn form her chest. Every cold look and harsh word he sent her way was working towards the end of her. She didn't know if she could take much more of this. "I'm sorry..." She started tentatively, in her quiet voice. She could see her last question affected him on some level, but soon that harsh facade was back up in place. His words had her frowning, and had her heart finally, shattering. "Is that it, then? Do you want me to leave? Do you want me to just... go away, for good?" Her tone said it all: she would if he wanted her to. All he needed to do was say the word.

Colton had never wanted to have a moment like this. He hadn't wanted to stand in front of her, watching her pain deepen as he told her that he didn't want anything to do with her. Because in all reality, it was the furthest thing from the truth. Eden hadn't been the only one who had felt something during their first meeting. He could recall it so easily. The way he'd gotten lost in her eyes. or the way she had seemed so different to him. He'd even gone as far as to give her her first kiss. He couldn't really say why he'd done it. Somehow they'd gotten on the topic and she's revealed that she'd never been kissed. In that moment, he had been the one who wanted to change that. So he just... did. At first he'd been afraid she would have been offended by it. But then she'd asked him to do it again. From then on Colton had realized that there was something special about Eden. Not just the fact that she was so unlike the girls he was normally around, but also that she was so willing to give him a chance. Not many people did. For that, he was inexplicably drawn to her. Maybe it hadn't been love from the first meeting, or at least he had told himself as much. But it hadn't taken him long to arrive at that place. Maybe he fell too fast, maybe he was going about everything completely the wrong way. But there was no arguing with the heart. It wanted what it wanted, no? Unfortunately, Colton's heart did not want the current situation at all. Even if it seemed there was no way around it. Eden had picked the worst time to confront him about their relationship. Things would have gone completely different had he not just been shooting up. But, he had. And so he was not the person she knew, or the person she claimed to love. "I'm sorry." For some reason, the words irritated more than anything else that had happened. Possibly because he knew she shouldn't be apologizing. She had done nothing wrong. "Don't apologize, Eden." He said, his tone still harsh and angry as if he were scolding her. She spoke again, and there was something in her questions that made him stop and stare. Even in his current state, he knew the answers. No. The answer was a large, resounding no. Colton didn't want her to leave. He didn't want to have to see the hurt in her eyes. He didn't want to live without her. But he saw no other choice. "Yes." His voice had lost it's anger and was instead replaced by an emotionless tone. As soon as the dreadful word slipped from his lips, he wanted to take it back. But he couldn't. Not now.

The girl had never had to deal with heartbreak before. She'd been able to stay away from that, much to her great relief. When Eden had met Colton, she knew that it had been big. She knew that the moment they got lost in each other's eyes, it would the end of life as she knew it. She'd never known that what she'd been waiting for was the person, the kiss, the moment, that would change her life forever. The end of her world as she knew it had come when she had met Colton Mercer, and she wouldn't change it now if she had anything to say about it. But apparently, she didn't have any say. There was only so much you could do when another person did their best to push you out of their life, and made it so clear that they didn't want you anymore. Another life shift, the end of her and Colton, the end of her world. As he continued to speak to her in that same harsh tone, she felt the heartbreak she had so luckily avoided in her earlier years of life creeping up on her. It was not to be avoided this time, this was inevitable. Every word he sent her way was like a dagger being pressed deeper and deeper into her poor heart. Why not apologize? It had to be her fault. She had to have done something wrong. He was lying to her when he said she hadn't done anything. She must have. It was the only explanation. Either that, or he had just realized what she thought he might: that he was just too good for her. Eden's chocolate eyes watched him timidly, as he seemed to think over what his next words would be. A sliver of hope raised in her. If he was thinking about it, then this meant it wasn't easy. Maybe there could be hope for them. But, then, everything shattered. The breath knocked out of her, and her shoulders slumped. Yes. Yes, he wanted her gone. Yes, he never wanted to see her again. Eden didn't know what to do, what to say. It seemed like her mind just shut down in that moment, as she was overwhelmed with the must peculiar feeling of sorrow and pain. It wasn't something she was familiar with, and she quickly realized that she hated it. But, she couldn't do anything about it now. He had made his choice, all that was left to her to do was to accept it. Which she couldn't do, but she wouldn't make this any harder than it already was. Besides, she was too close to tears, to breaking down. She didn't want him to see her like that. Eden averted her gaze from his flat hazel eyes, and she looked at her crossed arms. A pause, and she nodded her head, unable to say a word due to the constriction in her throat. She walked forward, reaching out to him as if to touch him one last time. But her hand paused mid way, and she let it drop to her side, before turning and walking towards the door, opening it, stepping out, closing it behind her. The moment the cool air hit her face, she was undone. Eden walked down the hall, to the stairs, and collapsed onto them. She leaned forward, her head in her heads, and she struggled with deep breaths to control her breathing. Tears were sliding down her face as she fought to keep the horrible emptiness and heart break from overwhelming her. This was too much. She couldn't handle this.

How had he gotten here? Once upon a time, the young man had been a happy, carefree soul. Life had been what he made it. Everything was possible, and nothing was irreparable. But then he had let himself get caught up in a world that simply wasn't his. And for what? What positive thing had come out of the partying and the drugs and the sex? Not one single damn thing. All it was doing was ruining everything he had, everything he held dear. He barely spoke to his own parents anymore, his friends seemed more distant than ever. And he was sitting there, breaking the heart of the one girl who meant the most to him. In all of his life, he'd never felt more like a fool than he did in that moment. A self hatred so strong rose up in him that he was almost physically sick with it. Eden didn't deserve this. She deserved to be happy, to have someone who wouldn't play with her heart as he had done. He wished he could tell her how much he loved her. How much she truly lit up his life. How every day he spent with her was one he would never forget. But more than anything, he wished he could take back everything he'd said and done to cause her any pain. But no amount of apologizing would fix what he was doing. He was breaking the one thing that showed him that life was worth living. How would he be able to fix that? He honestly didn't think he could. So, as he buried their relationship deeper and deeper into the ground, he couldn't help but wish that she would get angry with him. Why didn't she tell him exactly what he knew? That he was being stupid, that he didn't even deserve her. But Eden would never say these things. She simply couldn't. Which only served to increase his self-loathing. At least now she was no longer forced to deal with him. She could get over it and move on. It didn't matter that Colton would be miserable. As long as she was okay. Colton watched her as closely as he could, trying to focus through the haze in front of his eyes. She nodded and then stepped forward slightly as if she wanted to touch him. He suddenly felt the instinct to reach back, but he refrained. But right before she turned to leave, he caught the pain in her beautiful eyes. And as soon as she closed the door behind her, he was turning back to his room. He couldn't deal with this. The emotions inside of him were threatening to rip him to shreds. All he wanted to do was escape it. Escape everything that had happened, escape himself. And so, as he shakily loaded the syringe, he barely paid attention to how much was in it. As long as it helped him in his selfish endeavor to be numb. He pushed the disgusting liquid into his vein and waited for it to take the much needed effect. But it became clear to him after a few moments that something was terribly wrong. He stood up, almost falling over once again and as he exited his room, he stumbled into his dining room table. A pain in his chest suddenly made it very hard to breathe and he tried unsuccessfully to try and find his cell phone. Colton then collapsed to the floor, unable to move or cry out. His breathing was ragged and demanding. If only he could rid himself of the giant weight that was suddenly on his chest. And just then, he felt his entire body begin to spasm violently. His eyes rolled almost into the back of his head and he no longer had any control over his surroundings. It was almost funny, he'd just destroyed the best thing in his life and now he was going to die. Today was just not his day.

Things couldn't possibly get worse than they already were. Things couldn't go from bad to worse in this situation, because Eden was already sitting at rock bottom. The weight of her pain was crushing down on her, making it hard to breath as she struggled for breath, pushing past her tears, trying to focus on some lighter, easier topic. Something, anything to help her lose some of this agonizing feeling. Her hands laced through her hair, and she tried to wipe her face, to get rid of some of the tears, only to find them replaced two fold within the next few seconds. Why? What had she done wrong? What had gone wrong with them? They had been so perfect, Eden realized that. When he was himself, he took care of her. He made her laugh, he made sure she was safe, he treated her with respect and love. She made sure to do make him smile and laugh in return, and she vowed to make his life as good as she could, because it was the only thing she could do in return for how happy he made her. But now, he had torn it all away. Eden suddenly felt like she could never be happy again, and it was all Colton's fault. Irrational anger surged through her once more, and she disliked this emotion almost as much as the pain that was lacing through her. Almost, but not enough to banish it. Instead, she latched onto it. Maybe then, it wouldn't hurt so much. Her tears began to slow, and she stood shakily. Putting a hand to her face, she wiped away stray tears that were now coming for a totally different reason: because she was angry. She didn't deserve this. She hadn't done anything wrong... It was so unfair! How in the hell did things go so wrong? All the different thoughts were coursing through her mind, but they all had the same underlying theme: how much she hurt. How much she wished to God he hadn't said yes, that he hadn't told her to leave. She put a hand on his door handle, opening the door, ready to give him a long speech about how he was being ridiculous, and she stopped short. What she saw caused her heart to stop, panic to course through her. Colton lay, convulsing on the floor, and she had no idea what to do. She was frozen, totally frozen. A moment passed, her mind overcrowded with panicked thoughts, her anger totally gone. Finally, she was able to slip into action. She ran to him, collapsing to her knees beside him, hands fluttering out over him, as she desperately cried his name. "Colton! Colton, please! Stay with me." Her tone was high pitched, desperate. Then, something clicked in her head. She reached into her pocket, pulling out her phone, and dialing nine one one. The dispatcher picked up, and Eden hysterically talked her through the situation. What was wrong with him? He had to be okay. He had to, he couldn't leave her, not like this. Eden didn't know what to do except watch helplessly as he convulsed. Soon, but seemingly too long, paramedics came. They somehow managed to get him to stop convulsing long enough to load him on a stretcher. Eden was determined to get in the ambulance right behind them, and after desperate persuasion, they let her in. She stayed in a corner, watching as they quickly worked on him. He had to be okay. He had to.

Even as Colton lay on the floor, drifting out of consciousness, he couldn't help but feel like he was getting what he deserved. The very thing that had caused this whole mess, the very thing he was trying to take comfort in, was killing him. Literally. He could feel it, the overpowering darkness that would surely be permanent. And for some odd reason, he could accept it. Things would be better now that he wasn't there to screw them up. Everyone could move on from the hindrance that he was in their lives. He wouldn't be putting anyone else through emotional turbulence. But before the darkness could claim him completely, a familiar voice floated into his mind. The voice of an angel calling him back to Earth. Eden. But something was wrong. The angel was unhappy, she was calling his name in a terrified fashion. He wanted so desperately to tell her that it was alright. That what was happening was for the best. However, he couldn't do any of those things. And in an instant, he found that they weren't true at all. He didn't want to die. He didn't want to leave her. No matter what he'd done to her, or the terrible things he'd said, he didn't want her to no longer be there to put a smile on his face. Desperately, Colton tried to pull himself back from the realm of unconsciousness, but it was no use. He was soon swallowed whole by the impending silence. It felt like a split second later, but he somehow broke through. Cloudy images filled his sight followed by noises that he couldn't quite make out. Someone was speaking to him, but he didn't know who or what. Then he heard it. The angel was speaking again. Her voice stood out from everything else and he needed to see her face. But he still couldn't move. Without realize how he did it, his voice pushed through his throat and out into the air. "Eden." It was barely above a whisper, but it was there. All too soon, the darkness was dragging him under once again and the noises stopped. He couldn't say how long he was out, but when he came to once again, there was something very different. Not just with his surroundings, but within himself. He didn't feel the impending death and it wasn't so hard to breathe. His eyelids parted, allowing him to stare at what appeared to be a white mass. After a few seconds, Colton recognized it as the ceiling. Taking a deep breath, he let the memories consume him and a depression nestled itself in his chest. He was completely sober now, that much he could tell. Looking down, Colton saw that he was in a bed that he didn't recognize. He must have been taken to the hospital. Colt was tempted to try and go back to sleep so he could forget what he'd done for a little bit longer, but that was when something caught his eye. He turned his head slowly, his sight revealing the most beautiful creature he'd ever seen. She'd come to the hospital for him? After everything he'd just said and done to her? She truly was amazing. "Eden." His voice cracked from his grogginess, but he needed to say what was on his mind. "Eden, I'm so sorry." He hoped she would see this. He'd never been more sorry for anything in his life.

Eden had never felt more helpless in her life. all that she wanted to to was help Colton. to make him feel better, to make him stop convulsing and looking so deathly pale. to turn back the tables of time, so maybe she hadn't gone over that day and messed everything up anymore. in her head, it was still all her fault. their fight, everything leading up to it, even this. this was her fault, too. Eden didn't quite understand what was happening to him until the words drug and overdose were put into the same sentence. overdosing on drugs? Colton did drugs? she couldn't believe how well be had them all fooled. maybe it had been more easy to keep it from Eden, but surely not from all the other people that came to the hospital after she frantically called them. there had been a point, while the paramedics had been wheeling him into the emergency room, that she had heard him say her name. she had taken his hand, squeezed it ad tight as she could, and had promised he would be okay. and he was going to be. he had to be. Eden couldn't do this without him, live this life hhere. the realization of just how much she needed him hit her like a ton of bricks, and each time she thought about it, it pushed her to tears. his parents came to the hospital, and kellan and alex promised to come as soon as they could. none of them could believe it was an overdose. none of them understood how Colton, perfect, charming, nice, amazing Colton, could possibly be sucked into such a thing. Eden and his parents were finally let into his room after be stabilized, and Eden bit her lip at all the machines and wires connected to him. they scared her. his parents spoke to his still form for a while, before telling him that they would be back as soon. as they excited the room, Eden stood a few feet away from the bed. he had told her to stay away. did that still apply now? the thought broke her heart all over, and she might have stopped to dwell more on it had movement not startled her. soon, his groggy voice called her name, and her eyes net his. should she go to him? or was he just going to tell her to go away again? the next words out of his mouth answered that question fir her. in a few quick strides, she crossed to his bed, taking the hand with a lack of needles in her own, holding it tightly as she shook her head, raising her other hand to gently caress his cheek. "please don't apologize. it's okay. you're okay. I forgive you." most of the words out of her mouth were reflex, because there was so much going through her at that point. love, sadness, relief. relief that he was okay, relief that he was genuinely apologizing to her, for what seemed to be everything. "shhhh, it's okay now. I love you." once again the words were out of her mouth before she really thought about them. her fingers laced through his hair gently, as she pushed it back from his face. "are you okay?" she questioned quietly, staring down into his eyes, searching for a true answer. "what can I do for you?" she asked softly, so ready and willing to do anything.

Colton could remember so clearly the first hit he'd ever taken. It had been preceded by the promise that all of his troubles would evaporate into thin air. At the time, this had seemed like the only reasonable thing. Maybe it had been because he was tipsy, surrounded by people who seemed to be having the time of their lives, or because he'd desperately wanted to feel nothing at all. But he'd bought into the stories. And at first, it had seemed like it was the answer to his prayers, but soon enough he'd realized that he'd made a terrible mistake. But by that time, he was already hooked. And Colton found himself doing things he never would have thought himself capable of. Lying, flings, he'd even stolen money from his parents a couple of times to pay for the drugs. It was safe to say that the young man was someone he simply didn't recognize anymore. He was actually surprised that the people close to him hadn't had him all figured out. Colt had never been the best of liars. In fact, he was quite awful at it. But then, he had been keeping his distance from them more often. Especially his parents. Colton really did hate what he was doing. But he simply couldn't stop. He'd already been in over his head by the time he'd met Eden. And from the very moment that he recognized how pure she was, he should have vanished from her life. It had never been his intention to hurt her. However, for some reason he couldn't explain, he'd been drawn in by her. Which had led to him making the stupid choice of getting himself deeper under her skin. And before he knew it, they were much more than friends. Colton must have fooled himself into thinking that he could keep his secrets from her forever. For she was such a trusting and gentle creature. She never second guessed him when he lied right through his teeth. Because Eden wasn't accustomed to people doing such a thing to her. She'd had no reason to be suspicious. Maybe this was why he'd felt safer getting closer to her while he stayed away from everyone else. Though, he really should have known that things would take a turn for the worse. And they had done just that. Even as he awoke in the hospital to find her there with him, he knew he'd been completely stupid in all of the decisions he'd made. It showed how forgiving she really was, the fact that she would still be there for him. Eden rushed to his side as soon as he spoke, taking his hand in hers and gently caressing his face. Colton almost wished she didn't. He didn't deserve the forgiveness she was so willingly throwing at him. He deserved for her to scream at him, telling him that it didn't matter that he was sorry. That he'd screwed up so badly that there was simply no way to fix it. She spoke to him, telling him once again that she loved him. Those three words stung deeper than anything else. How could she still love him? She surely had to know everything by now. Hazel eyes gazed into her dark chocolate ones and he saw that she meant everything she said. Closing his eyes momentarily, he slowly shook his head. And as she gently pushed her hand through his hair, he looked to her once again. Her angelic voice broke the silence of the room once again. This time she asking if he was alright, if there was anything she could do for him. She was simply too good for him. With every action she took and every word she spoke, this knowledge was ingrained deeper into his brain. Finally he answered her. "I'll live." Colt couldn't exactly say he was okay at that moment, but he knew he would be. Physically at least. "You don't need to do anything for me, Eden. You've already done too much." He raised the hand she wasn't holding to gently touch her cheek. "I'm sorry for everything. I'm sorry I lied to you. I'm sorry I pushed you away. I didn't want it to happen like that. I didn't want to hurt anyone, especially you." He paused for a few seconds. "I love you, Eden. I know you probably won't believe me after this, but I really do." And he did. More than anything. He just hoped she could understand that.

Of course, Eden had an idea of what she should be doing. What most people would be doing in her situation. Some people would have just left, not gone back to his apartment in the first place. But she couldn't have done that. She couldn't leave him, and definitely not as easily as just walking away. Some people would have gone back, called an ambulance, then walked away. Never said another word to that person. Some might have even gone to the hospital with them, to await the news as to whether or not he was okay. But once they found out, of course, they'd be gone. Eden couldn't do any of these things. Something inside her just didn't make that an option. This was most likely because she knew that Colton needed her. That Colton would wake up, and he would want to see her. Part of her knew that when he told her to leave, he hadn't really wanted her to. That it had been a mistake, and now that she knew that he was doing drugs, she couldn't help but see why he had been pushing her away. But now that she knew, there was hope living inside her again. Maybe he would take her back. Maybe they could be okay, and they'd be able to get past this after he got help. His words rung in her ears, and they made her eyes burn with tears she refused to shed. She would not cry in front of him, it wasn't what he needed. At his words, she sighed, "Never too much. I can never do enough." Her words were honest. She'd do anything and everything for him and that was a fact. She raised her hand to cover his, and her eyes were infinitely tender as she responded, "Shhh... it's okay. I know you are, I know you didn't want to." Her tone was just as tender as her look. His next words warmed her to her very core, despite the situation. "I do. I do believe you. I trust you." She told him softly, leaning down to gently press her lips to his cheek. The moment wasn't the most picture perfect, but at least it was happening. It meant so much to her, she couldn't fully explain. But she did know one thing for sure: Colton would be okay. She would take care of him.

Colton wasn't stupid. Well, not completely stupid. He knew that most people would have left him to die. Maybe not intentionally, but still. The only thing he could think of that saved him was that Eden had to have come back. It would explain why he remembered hearing her voice calling to him in desperation. If he'd been fighting with anyone but Eden, they wouldn't have come back. He didn't know why she'd done it, but he was thankful that she had. He would have surely been dead by this time was it not for her. And so, he owed her much more than his apologies, he owed her his life. Something he was sure he'd never be able to repay her for. And the best part about Eden was that she would never ask him to. Colton had never done anything worthy of obtaining Eden and truthfully it scared him. He'd been so prepared to push her away, but he would never be prepared to lose her. As hard as it was to believe that she was still there, it didn't make it any less true. Still, there was always the possibility that one day she wouldn't. He would never blame her for leaving him. In fact, he still couldn't figure out why she wasn't long gone already. Maybe, but this was a very small chance, she saw something in him that he didn't see in himself. Something that made her stay. For the life of him, Colt didn't expect to ever understand what it was. But he was glad that it existed. As his eyes burned into hers, he didn't miss the sudden moisture that accumulated in them. There he went, making her cry. He should have known that it would happen eventually in this whole situation. but it didn't make the pang of guilt any less so. She spoke and he almost didn't understand what she'd said. For it was far too crazy to be true. Never enough? For him? Of course she could do enough, in fact she'd passed that point long ago. Colton had never been so aware of her devotion to him than in that moment. Her smaller hand rested on top of his own, but the young man's gaze was still on Eden's expression. The warmth in her eyes pierced his heart. His throat constricted slightly with her words. So many emotions were running though Colton at the moment that he didn't know what to do. "I trust you." It was this that really got to him. "Eden, I..." But he didn't know what to say. He closed his eyes as she leaned down, pressing her soft lips to his cheek before pulling back. But he didn't look back to her right away. For a few seconds, he mulled things over in his mind. When he opened his eyes again, a determined expression was in them. "I want you to know that I'm going to change. For you. I won't... I won't put you through this again. I promise."
